The place is LA, and the time is 1975. The then 28-year old American photo-grapher Stephen Shore takes his gas station shots. They came to be known as the La Brea Shots (the gas station was at the corner of Beverly Boulevard and La Brea Avenue). Shore was to write photographic history.
Around 35 years later German publisher and photo book dealer Markus Schaden gets six German photographers to use the La Brea shots as an inspirational starting point for work of their own.
As part of an extensive artist-in-residency programme in LA, the photo-
graphers have a timeframe that extends to 2012. During this period they are endeavouring to create photographic reference points and thereby create a tribute to the icon of New Contemporary Colour Photography. It's work that significantly aided colour photography in its instalment as an art form.
Stephen Shore is not a silent observer though, he is actively involved in the project. He has announced to partake in common workshops that will be supported by Germany´s Goethe Institute.
