The Illuminarium

Described as an Alice and Wonderland-esque experience, the exhibition - showing at Queen’s Hall Arts Centre in Hexham and shortly after at the Toffee Factory in Newcastle - promises to take visitors on a trip through the life cycle of one of the world's most mysterious creatures: the moth, with an immersive exhibition of luminous sculptures.

With the use of multiple projections, sound and stop-motion animation the beautifully crafted models are sure to enchant and engage audiences.

Chloe Rodham is a talented Northumberland-based emerging artist who specialises in combining traditional stop-motion techniques and model-making with digital creative processes. She explains: “Illuminarium will engage audiences with a unique view of the world through the poetry of its smallest inhabitants.

“With glowing fibre-optic caterpillars and cocoon shaped lanterns, our exhibition will reveal a projected stop-motion animation of moths.”

Tim Lozinski a 3D artist, animator and game developer says: “I really wanted to work on a more ‘hands-on’ project and this particular installation and body of work will allow me to do just that. I enjoy tinkering with electronics and optics and so my modelling work on The Illuminarium will focus on those aspects of the piece.

“Sound will complete the Illuminarium, with a murmuring atmosphere nature sounds adding to the experience. This installation will be a bright and colourful multimedia spectacle creating an artificial version of a natural habitat. We hope our work will help audiences see moths in a completely different light.”

You have two opportunities to experience The Illuminarium at the Toffee Factory in Newcastle from 10-12 December 2015.

There will be an associated series of talks and workshops led by the artists at the Toffee Factory.
