About

'Sculpture communicates an immediate sense of life – you can feel the pulse of it’ Barbara Hepworth, 1959

Open to artists of any age and at any stage in their career, The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture celebrates artists who have made a significant contribution to contemporary sculpture. The new £30,000 biennial award is named in honour of Wakefield-born artist Barbara Hepworth.

The four finalists for the inaugural prize -

Phyllida Barlow, Steve Claydon, Helen Marten and David Medalla – reflect the breadth of sculpture being produced in the UK today. The exhibition celebrates this expansive art form from kinetic sculptures and experiential and sensory installations to work inviting audience participation.

The winner will be announced on 17 November at an award dinner and visitors to the gallery will be encouraged to come and ‘judge’ for themselves.

The judging panel of five are:

- Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Director of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and GAM Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino
- David Chipperfield, architect and designer of The Hepworth Wakefield
- Sheika Hoor al-Qasimi, President Sharjah Art Foundation
- Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, President of The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, collector and patron of the arts
- Alastair Sooke, art critic and broadcaster
