About
Somerset based artist Pamela Legg will be exhibiting a collection of her unique urban and cartoony styled paintings featuring a character of her own creation known as ‘The Gutterman’.
A Dickensian styled character depicted wearing a top hat, a green coat and large black boots the figure imagined by the artist will be appearing in a selection of original acrylic and oil paintings inspired by locations around Bristol or from her imagination.
She has been painting since the age of 14 and states that “I was just bored one day and was sketching away when I came up with a character in a top hat. He had a broken gutter above him and the rain water was dripping down over his hat and on to his shoes, so he became known as ‘the Gutterman”.
This is the first time that the 30 year old former graduate who studied animation at UWE Bristol has shown her Gutterman paintings in Bristol but her work is on show all year round in galleries in Glastonbury and Chard.
One of the most intriguing aspects of her work is the detail and humour that appears in every piece making them appeal to all ages. Hidden among the brickwork of the old buildings little mice can be seen looking out. Or patrolling on top of the rooftops a stray tom cat can be seen looking maybe for one of the mice hiding away or maybe one of the many pigeons? Keep a look out for any lost property posters appealing for an objects safe return as generally the ‘lost’ object can be found hidden in that very painting! Influenced by the artists animation background each painting tells a story and inspired by her love of history as many of the pieces depict the Gutterman in a bygone era (with just a touch of humour).
As well as the original Gutterman paintings to be enjoyed there will be a selection of limited edition prints available as well as a range of Gutterman themed greetings cards, gifts and eco friendly cotton shopping bags available.
