About

Pay a visit to Great North Art Show this September and discover hundreds of artworks displayed in the splendid setting of Ripon Cathedral, North Yorkshire.

Open seven days a week this is a breathtaking array of art, which features more than 350 artworks, of all sizes, colours and styles, from printmaking and illustration to painting and sculpture.

Come along to be inspired through the work of more than 56 emerging and established artists. This is also a great opportunity to take a closer look inside this splendid medieval cathedral which can be traced back to the 7th century, and boasts a fantastic collection of carved misericords which are said to have inspired Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland characters.

A special highlight of the 2017 exhibition will be a special collection of works by artist Tom Wood, whose paintings are held by HRH The Prince of Wales and The National Portrait Gallery Print Collection. Tom is an acclaimed portrait artist whose sitters include Professor Lord Robert Winston and Alan Bennett, both commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, London. Wood will be displaying a selection of new paintings at the Great North Art Show.

The Great North Art Show is unique as it allows for a collection of work to be shown by each artist rather than simply an individual piece. The selections for this year’s exhibition reveal a broad range of practice, from closely observed wildlife studies to expressive prints depicting stylized landscapes and vibrant abstract paintings.

The 2017 Great North Art Show opens on Saturday 2 September and runs until Sunday 24 September. Entry to the Cathedral and exhibition is free and all artworks are for sale.
