Vincent James returns to PAPER after his summer residency at the gallery. The Grand Scheme of Things features a variety of new works including animations, 2D work, sculpture and a large room sized collage mural.

About

Following on from his Exploring PAPER residency over the summer, Vincent James is back at PAPER to present the development of his artistic practice in The Grand Scheme of Things. The exhibition will feature a variety of new works inspired by Vincent’s time at PAPER: including animations, 2D work, sculpture and a large collage mural that covers most of the wall space in the gallery.

For Vincent, the gallery in which these works were formulated, is as important as the various objects that appear throughout the work and star in different scenarios. Vincent sees these individual works as an installation, inspired by and produced within PAPER gallery itself.

Vincent James is best known for using cartoon imagery to create surreal sculptures, paintings and animations. His work draws on an ever expanding catalogue of objects appropriated from cartoons. However, as world events continue to take a darker turn, this has been reflected in Vincent’s artwork. There is a post-apocalyptic feel to much of the work in this show, which features explosions, falling rubble and toxic waterfalls. Despite this, there is a sense of hope and a celebration of life emerging from the wreckage. Jeffrey Lewis’ album title It’s the One’s Who’ve Cracked That the Light Shines Through from 2003 has been an inspiration for Vincent while putting together this exhibition.

After completing an MA at Goldsmiths in 1999, Vincent James has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is part of the Touchstones Art Gallery Permanent Collection and Frederick R Weisman Art Foundation Collection, California. Visitors to Bury’s Light Night over the last three years will remember his site-specific installations projected into empty shop windows. Since the residency PAPER has presented Vincent at The Manchester Contemporary and Sluice Art Fair.
