The Future of Art: A Camp – Or: How to Bury the White Man? continues Erik Niedling’s A Pyramid for Me, a 2014 exhibition at Haus am Lützowplatz (HaL).

About

Niedling’s project, now ongoing for a total of seven years, is about the attempt to build Pyramid Mountain, a concept developed by author Ingo Niermann and then transferred to Erik Niedling. It is an at least 200-meters-tall pyramid that will be carved out of a mountain and then buried under the excavated debris.

In a next step that anticipates our physical immortality, Pyramid Mountain will no longer entomb a single human being and his treasures, but an entire epoch defined by the pursuit of symbolic immortality. It was a cruel time, as the pursuit of immortality led to constant suppression, robbery and murder on a grand scale. And no one has taken collecting and destroying to such great extremes as the White Man.

Niedling invites interested visitors and experts from the fields of art, politics and science to HaL to discuss ideas for realizing Pyramid Mountain. He uses filmed documentation of the discussions to produce a web series tied to The Future of Art (2010), a documentary film showing Ingo Niermann and Niedling meeting key art world figures for advice on how to attain decades-long success as an artist.

The third book in Ingo Niermann and Erik Niedling’s The Future of Art publication series is scheduled to be released this fall. The first book, The Future of Art: A Manual (Sternberg Press, 2011), consists of expanded interviews from the 2010 web TV series. The second publication, The Future of Art: A Diary (Sternberg Press, 2012), is about how Niedling lived one year as if it were his last in preparation for the monumental task ahead. In the subsequent third book, The Future of Art: An Adventure, Niedling describes his nearly 20-year odyssey to become a truly significant artist. It focuses on Niedling and Niermann’s efforts and turmoils in the endeavor to advance Pyramid Mountain’s realization. There will be a reading from the manuscript of the third book at HaL before its publication.

The Future of Art: A Camp – Or: How to Bury the White Man? corresponds directly with Pyramid Mountain – Burial of the White Man, Erik Niedling’s simultaneous contribution to Manifesta 12 as part of EXILE X Summer Camp: May the bridges I burn light the way, 5x5x5 in Palermo. Curated by María Inés Plaza Lazo.
