The popular Contemporary Britihs Painting Prize exhibition, which debuted at the Riverside Gallery in 2016, showcases the 2017 entires at the Stables Gallery for the first time.

About

The winner of the 2017 Contemporary British Painting Prize will be announced on Saturday 26 August, between 12-2pm, at the Stables Gallery, Orleans House, London.

The 12 shortlisted artists for the exhibition are:

Michael Ajerman, Jake Clark, Jadé Fadojutimi, Louise Giovanelli, Juliette Losq, Cara Nahaul, Simon Parish, Narbi Price, Alli Sharma, Joan Sugrue, Molly Thomson, Helen Turner

The winning artist will receive: a solo exhibition at The Herrick Gallery, London; a critical essay on their practice by art critic and curator Nicholas Usherwood; a £2,000 purchase prize for their winning work which will then enter The Priseman Seabrook Collection of 21st Century British Painting.

“For the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2017 we received 680 entries, with each demonstrating the sheer strength, vitality and creative energy in the field of painting today. From these entries a clear commitment to the full range of painting – representational, photographic, abstract (geometric and gestural), and conceptual approaches – was shown. This shortlist aims to present the best in contemporary painting, and the diversity of current practice.”

The prize winner selection panel judges for 2017 are:

Elena Dranichnikova, Founder of the Moscow Art Collectors Group (MACS)

Alice Herrick Artist, curator and owner of the Herrick Gallery, London

Jessica Litherland, Visual Arts Producer, mac Birmingham

Stephen Snoddy, Director, New Art Gallery, Walsall

Nicholas Usherwood Curator, Art Critic and Writer on Contemporary Art

The winner of the 2016 Contemporary British Painting Prize was Cathy Lomax.

Her winning painting is currently on a tour of four museums in China, as part of the Priseman Seabrook Collection. As part of the prize, Cathy also has a solo show at Swindon Museum opening on 6 September 2017, with an essay written by Paul O’Kane on her practice.  

The Contemporary British Painting Prize: Group Show 2017 will feature 3 paintings by each of the 12 finalists at The Stables Gallery, Orleans House, Riverside, Twickenham TW1 3DJ
