About
The Colour of Time is a visual notebook of what Barbara Downs has seen and what delights her about a repeated single train journey: movement, rhythm, the fleeting line, the linear colour. Her work is about ambiguity and unexpected vision ' a process of perception and discovery rather than affirmation of pre-conceived facts.Downs photographs are sometimes figurative and sometimes abstract. The work is a personal interpretation of space yet importantly no manipulation of colour takes place. The camera extends her vocabulary, catching the colour-embedded rhythm of landscape and the layered multiplicity of cities.
Barbara Downs' work has become more direct, reduced to bare essentials as she has aged and looks backwards and forwards at her evolving sense of personal history. It is a poem to her grandchildren.
