The Club’s Conception (or How the Egg Was Cracked) retraces the now-demolished past venues of Birmingham’s The Nightingale Club, which first opened in 1969.

About

From a terraced house to a working men’s club to an anglers association, its previous sites reflect ongoing threats of regeneration, and the need to shift, occupy and adapt heteronormative structures for queer purpose.

Working in collaboration with those who attended the club’s three preceding venues, The Club’s Conception (or How the Egg Was Cracked) maps these spaces from recollections. Architectural plans and models accompany descriptions of walls, floors, doors and windows, replacing absent photographs and positioning both personal and collective narratives within archival significance.
