About

The Cinema House of ĘXÏSTĘNZÎĀ is an exhibition by Freyja Eilíf installed site specifically as a participatory venue for both video artists and guests. The exhibition itself is an entrance hall into a cinema salon, staging a ceremony for stepping into a new place while providing tools for viewing the world through different methods. The dark void of the cinema becomes a territory for inner navigation.

Since the invention of cinema in the late 19th century, the screen and the physical being of the corporeal human has co-evolved in mutual symbiosis. In ĘXÏSTĘNZÎĀ, the viewer’s body exists in the same world of the screen with the ability of the viewer to watch the screen in which they are taking part in a blurry frontier both mystical and materialistic. The history of the moving image is the history of searching for the truth through images using the narrative of storytelling to make meaning.

ĘXÏSTĘNZÎĀ sees the brain as a screen, an image itself, part of the flesh of the viewer but also part of the technology of cinema.  Other-worldly flesh has always been part of your flesh, a clairsentient expressway through the skin of film. Come into the experimental theater of cinematic flesh featuring moving image works from artists and creators around the world.

Freyja Eilíf (1986, Iceland) is the owner & director of exxistenz, the Museum of Perceptive Art in Reykjavík. She studied fine arts at the Iceland Academy of the Arts (BFA 2014) and has since exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally. Her work explores ideas from post-internet, posthumanism and mystical sciences through operations of visual manifestations into other realms of existence. In this process, Eilíf has developed an intimate relationship with her own software using the mind as a tool to examine different contingencies, in addition to various mediums such as video, installation, sculpture and painting that document sensorial experiences from multiple dimensions. These mixed media works are frequently site specifically installed as an attempt to create harmony between the renderings perceived at each time.
