AboutCentre for Recent Drawing presents a project by artist Bob and Roberta Smith (aka Patrick Brill). Based in London, he exhibits internationally, and is currently the artist-trustee at Tate, and is a much-loved mentor for generations of artists through his teaching and his public political engagement. Much of his his work uses text that evokes hand-drawn political sloganeering.
'The Center for moving things about alot' is an invitation to the public to shift art works around and re-arrange the space at C4RD. Bob and Roberta Smith propose this kind of fluid engagement with found and made objects as a form of drawing. The intention is that the space will be a different space for every viewer. The piece is inspired by childhood experiences of playing in farmyard barns with forgotten or redundant objects placed in the barn for safe keeping by farmers. Bob and Roberta Smith propose this work as a space for reflection.
Space becomes paper, objects become marks. There is also a sense of mischief and enjoyment of arbitrary relationships in an art world where precise relationships divined by artists are given weight. Bob and Roberta Smith will be present at the opening but like the Farmer they have to leave the space and who knows what will happen?
As drawing, this project allows consideration of questions of agency, to an extent democratising possibilities for authorship and allowing a flexible network of points or incidents that form an ongoing and flexible drawing.
