About

An afternoon of classical music inspired by a true story of protest - The Cellist of Sarajevo. Vedran Smailovià„‡ was 'The Cellist of Sarajevo' - a musician from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Having witnessed the death of 22 people in a bread queue by a mortar bomb attack during the siege of Sarajevo, he played at the site for 22 days. In this special afternoon of classical music, his fascinating and inspiring story comes to life as Ensemble Champagne play pieces including 'Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor' and David Wilde's piece, inspired by Vedran's story. Ensemble Champagne are classically trained musicians who studied at the country's leading music colleges. They have worked with many leading international chamber musicians, including Emmanuel Hurwitz, Raphael Wallfisch and Siegmund Nissel. Part of our Protest (#newburyprotest) season of work. Protest is a month of exhibitions, talks, performances and debates exploring how protest inspires art, and how creativity inspires protest.
