About
An installation of works by renowned international glass artists Monica Guggisberg & Philip Baldwin will be exhibited at St. Mary’s Cathedral during the Edinburgh Festival, and curated by Gallery TEN’s Paul Musgrove. Their modern, minimalist aesthetic provides a dramatic juxtaposition against the backdrop of St. Mary’s ornate Gothic architecture. The Cathedral Collection will include new works from their frames series, mobiles, and large scale boat sculptures, including a nine meter long version recently exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, and the Applied Arts Museum in Frankfurt.
Baldwin & Guggisberg’s 37 year partnership in the medium of glass has brought them international recognition as one of the most collected and prized collaborations in the world. They have recently moved their residence and studio to the Welsh countryside after many years in Switzerland and Paris, France. The Cathedral Collection will be the first time their work is shown in Scotland.
The duo has always looked for “clear lines” through the use of archaic and representative forms, symbolising history, journey and the nomadic impulse of humanity. In their work, that search has translated itself into abstract and poetic expressions of these themes. Their installation in St. Mary’s Cathedral presents a unique opportunity to view their work in such a monumental context. The challenge is to honour the historical memory of the place, and create a link between the artistic sensibility of Baldwin & Guggisberg and this powerful space of worship and community.
The dates for the exhibition are 29.07.16 – 19.09.16 inclusive. It will take place throughout the Edinburgh Festival and run until late September when the 20th anniversary North Lands Creative Glass conference will be held at the Edinburgh College of Art.
ARTISTS’ BIO Artwork by Baldwin & Guggisberg is included in the permanent collections of over 30 museums worldwide, including the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (Frankfurt), Musée Ariana (Geneva), Musée des arts décoratifs (Paris), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Chrysler Museum (Norfolk, VA), Corning Museum of Glass (Corning, NY), Denver Art Museum (Denver, CO), Die Neue Sammlung (Munich), Eretz Israel Museum (Tel Aviv), Houston Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), Indianapolis Museum of Art (Indianapolis, IN), Museo del vetro (Murano), Swiss National Collection of Applied Art and The Toledo Museum of Art (Toledo, OH). The duo has had numerous solo exhibitions and their art has been included in many group shows and art fair presentations throughout the world during their prestigious career.
