The Brevity of My Gaze:

The Castle Prize Exhibition by Jodie Wingham

Opening Night: 2nd October 6-9pm

Surface Gallery is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Jodie Wingham. The exhibition is the culmination of four-week residency, which was awarded to Wingham as the Surface Gallery prize for the Nottingham Castle Open 2014.

Wingham combines printmaking with contemporary methods of display where images are turned into sculptural forms that create a space to walk through. Inspired by the idea of the viewer as voyeur, the artist focuses on the viewer’s desire to look and to gain information. The artist offers us glimpses into private interiors, and invites us to fill in the gaps; to create narratives found within the images on display. While encouraging imaginative speculation, and allowing a high level of interpretative freedom, Wingham also considers how the act of looking is invested with a power that is sometimes discomforting, even dangerous.

In a media saturated world, where we are constantly assailed by a stream of visual information, Wingham argues that many of us have stopped looking at images; we glance at them and forget them. “I want a greater viewing time to be created with my work”, she says, “making the viewer have to look harder, think and use their own imagination to complete the images on display”. These images are often digitally manipulated, and further distorted through the method of printing, forcing the viewer into close inspection of the work. Wingham wants her viewer “to really become involved and engaged with the experience of looking”.
