IMA Studio is pleased to present "The back of the shrimp that cries" by Ting-Ting Cheng, in association with The Muse Gallery | Studio. The screening includes an artist talk before the film, followed by a Q&A with the artist afterwards.
About
Inspired by a personal story of the artist's mother, Cheng created two fictional characters - Tin-Tin, who travelled to Seoul in order to find the Korean man of her mother's romantic past, and Christina, an Asian American who moved to Seoul in order to find her 'root'. By following their journeys, the project explores the national relationship between Taiwan and South Korea as well as the concept of race, gender, tradition, nationhood, and colonial history.
The project was made during Cheng's artist in residency at MMCA Changdong, Seoul, and it was funded by National Culture and Arts Foundation, Taiwan and MMCA Korea.
Ting-Ting Cheng was born in 1985, Taiwan, and moved to London in 2008. She graduated from MA Photographic Studies at University of Westminster and MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. Her work, through the use of photography, video, intervention, and installation, investigates prominent sociocultural issues and revisits previously undocumented historical events.
IMA Studio is looking to reshape the way artists learn, manage, and practice their art. As part of our ongoing research we look for ways to spark wider discussions around the realities of pursuing an artist career. Based at The Muse gallery since 2018, we provide innovative and bespoke support for artists.
