HAU Hebbel am Ufer and the 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art address the symbolic-acoustic speculations revolving around Kwaito. This eclectic musical movement, which reached its high point in South Africa in the early 1990s, opened up a room for young people to experience a global sound full of political, economic and philosophical meanings. The Thath’i Cover Okestraaffiliated with the interdisciplinary and independent research and media art collective Keleketla! Library from Johannesburg explores Kwaito’s history (or histories), not least through the lens of the internationally acclaimed mbira virtuoso Ambuya Stella Chiweshe. An exhibition and a Houseclub with pupils from Hector-Peterson-School will also be dedicated to the history of Kwaito.
Commissioned and coproduced by Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art; HAU Hebbel am Ufer (Berlin)
