15 Artists and makers showing work in the rooms of the historic house over the weekend as part of the E8 Art and Craft Trail

About

The E8 Art and Craft Trail is upon us again, following the resounding success of the artist-led inaugural event in Hackney, East London, back in December of last year, the Trail is back  this June with an early summer weekend of open homes, studios, events and who knows what? More than 40 artists and makers at eighteen different E8 locations will welcome you in to take a look at their work, the artists will be there to chat to about their practice, you can maybe treat yourself to a piece or two of their art or craft. Actually I think there might be more than eighteen now, the list is growing...

Guided by an interactive map on the trail website, you’ll be able to stroll from studio to studio, checking out the details of the artists on their individual web pages as you go. Fine art, illustration, ceramics, jewellery and more; the Trail invites you to spend time browsing and meeting the artists who still live and work in the neighbourhood.

Particularly exciting is the new addition of a group show at 195 Mare St, a beautiful yet somewhat neglected 17th century Georgian town house, whose new owners are hosting 15 artists for the June Trail before beginning renovations later in the year. The artists will be occupying different rooms in the big house that really is a must see in it's present state, The showing a range of work, including painting, prints, photography, jewellery and ceramics. It will be an amazing opportunity to take a look inside one of Hackney’s most interesting and historic buildings, before a major renovation gets underway, really is good to know the building is now in good hands, it was touch and go for a while.

That House on Mare Street is at 195 Mare Street, originally Built in 1697 as a grand country house, it is one of Hackney's oldest buildings.  Home to the Elizabeth Fry Refuge from 1860-1913, the house housed thousands of young women recently released from prison. In the twentieth century, it became the New Lansdowne Working Men's Club.  195 Mare Street will soon be restored as a family home and community arts venue.

The E8 Art & Craft Trail happens on Saturday and Sunday June 10th and 11th  2023, 11am-5pm. For a full list of artists, makers and places see the Trail website
