Drawings by Megan Needham
About
Megan Needham’s practice deals with concepts of repetition, seriality and order found within the everyday, underpinned by the motif of the grid and channeled through the discipline of drawing. Using the visual structures of objects within urban and industrial environments, of which she values as ‘found drawings,’ she translates them into a series of hand rendered lines.
These two images are from Needham’s Test Pieces series. A series of drawings on primed boards. Each Test Piece explores a combination of different materials and processes, whilst also demonstrating obsessive, repetitive and labor-intensive work. The edges of each Test Piece have purposely been left raw, as the layers of gesso gradually build up on top of one another, they become reminiscent of the process behind their making. The gesso-primed ground also holds connotations towards traditional drawing and painting preparation methods yet this is juxtaposed by the Test Piece’s minimal and abstract aesthetic.
Needham studied Fine Art at Leeds College of Art and currently lives and works in Manchester. More of her work can be found over at www.cargocollective.com/meganneedham
