Aspex and Making Space are delighted to present an exhibition showcasing the work of award-winning ceramicist Tessa Eastman.
About
Tessa creates unique sculptures from clay using various hand-building techniques. Excited by the strange otherworldliness of natural phenomena, which transports her away from the mundane, she is intrigued by regular and repetitive sequences found in organisms. She explains: “I aim for my forms to be beautiful in a bizarre manner so as to aid the appreciation of life’s absurdities where things don’t always make sense”.
Tessa, who trained at the University of Westminster, currently holds a studio at Cockpit Arts in London. In 2016 she was named the winner of Craft Emergency,anopen submission group exhibition featuring the work of designers and makers from across the globe. In early 2016 Aspex launched an open-call in association with Making Space.Eleven makers were selected for the show, of which Tessa was one;she was announced the winner in November 2016.
For the past 23 months Tessa has been working energetically, creating her most accomplished work to date. Now it’s time for Tessa to take to the main stage with a solo exhibitionat Aspex in Gunwharf Quays (Portsmouth)which will take place from the 19 September – 18 October.
Those wanting an opportunity to find out more are in luck as Making Space is also hosting a one-off special event with the ceramicist. On 22 September(11.00 - 12.00hrs)Tessa will be taking part in an ‘in-conversation’ style event. During this one-hour talk Tessa will explain her practice and how her work has evolved since being awarded the prize.
