Former 20-21 Open Exhibition winner presents works exploring the relationship between natural and man-made structures.

About

Terence Clarke won the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre Open Exhibition in 2014 with his stunning large-scale drawing of Bull Sand Fort, one of the World War One fortifications that remain in the Humber Estuary. Terence feels a deep affinity with the River Humber, Spurn and the forts. In particular he is interested in how coastal erosion affects these elements and the landscape. The Bull Sand Fort and its smaller partner Haile Sand Fort are a recurring image in his work, their brutal outlines symbols of both resilience and decay.

"I feel the forts are silent sentinels … they hold a fascination and deep resonance with the people of the Humber on both the north and south banks."

This exhibition features a selection of works including Women of Steel, a new series of large-scale drawings inspired by patterns and textures he noticed in the minimal steel sculptures of American artist Richard Serra. Like his images of the Humber forts, the drawings explore nature’s influence and evidence, (add comma) in even the most solid and resilient of man-made structures.
