An exhibition of paintings and drawings made over the last ten years. The subject matter is mainly from the landscape and farms in Cornwall.

About

About 65 works - paintings (oils and gouache) and drawings (charcoal) made over the last ten years. Most have not been shown before.

My work is concerned with atmosphere, time passing, outer and internal worlds and an intense feeling for place. The land has always been important to me as long as I can remember.

As an artist I think you can only partly know or explain where your subject matter comes from, how one thing inspires you to paint and another doesn’t. I have a longstanding obsession with painting farms and farm buildings. Often I think I will paint something else and then find I don’t.

My childhood was spent near to and later living on farms. I remember how as a child the fields and the farmyard seemed like the whole world. A very early memory is new cattle arriving and calling all through the night. Later when my Mother and my Step-Dad were dairy farming I saw how the nature and the hard work of farming rooted farmers deeply in the place. I think when I'm painting I go back to the sense of a field or farmyard being a whole world.

Seeing several years work together I can see how I’ve returned to the same subjects but approached the way I paint them differently at different times

I wanted to show my work in Morvah Schoolhouse gallery with the windows all looking out at the fields.
