In 1926, Lucia Moholy and her husband, László Moholy-Nagy, lived in the Dessau Bauhaus Masters' Houses. This experience influenced Lucia's photography and their collaborations. Dr. Schuldenfrei's lecture explores this impact and the current experience of living in these historic homes.
About
In 1926 Lucia Moholy moved into one of the purpose-built Masters’ Houses at the Dessau Bauhaus. Along with her husband, László Moholy-Nagy, she experienced first-hand what the architectural protagonists of modernism in Germany had long espoused about modern living. Nestled in a pine grove, Walter Gropius and his Bauhaus faculty members lived in a tightknit community that spurred modern concepts and an extraordinary body of artistic output, including Lucia Moholy’s meticulous photographs of the houses, their architectural elements and the modern objects and furniture within. These actively lived-in spaces became show houses not only for how modernism could be produced but how modern lives might be led. This lecture considers the impact of living in this architecture on Lucia Moholy’s own photography and on the concurrent close collaborations with László. Dr Schuldenfrei offers insight into the effects of these houses, gleaned from her own research stay one hundred years later. The speaker will also consider the current day realities of residing inside a UNESCO World Heritage site.
