Join author and art historian Willem-Jan Verlinden and Creative Director of Van Gogh House Livia Wang on a walking tour and discussion of Vincent van Gogh's formative time in London.

About

The talk will expand on Van Gogh’s time living at 87 Hackford Road with his sister Anna, as well as the influence of the city's booming print industry on the artist. Van Gogh was deeply fascinated by newspapers 'The London Illustrated News' and 'The Graphic', referring and collecting them throughout his life.

The event includes a short walk and visit to the neighbouring Type Archive, a collection that spans 600 years of printing history. The archive holds vast collections of the material and equipment needed to manufacture metal and wooden type for letterpress printing. The Type Archive celebrates creative and engineering ingenuity.

This event is part of 'New Dutch Writing', and supported by the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

Access requirements

  • We will be asking visitors to wear a mask or visor while in the house and to observe safe distancing in line with government guidance
  • We also ask visitors to take a rapid flow test before visiting and not to come if the test is positive or if they have been in contact with someone who has tested positive recently. Please contact us to rearrange your visit if this happens.
  • Many of the floors are made of original timbers so we do not permit high heels in the house.
  • Parking around Van Gogh House is limited, so please keep this in mind if arriving by car.
  • The space is small, so we ask that visitors do not come with large bags or are prepared to leave bags in a safe space on the ground floor of the house.
  • The house is a Grade II private residence with numerous stairs and narrow passageways, and we regret that wheelchair or step free access is not possible.
  • We welcome babes in arms on our tours. There is no age restriction for tours, but in the interests of health and safety we ask that children are accompanied by an adults
