#besmartaboutart networking is a monthly opportunity presented by Be Smart About Art to meet artists, curators & other art world peers, view exhibitions and spaces, and expand knowledge – creative and professional alike!

About

In February – on the eve of Women’s History Month, we’re visiting Bosse and Baum to talk with gallerists Lana Churchill and Alexandra Warder about the gallery as well as view the exhibition ‘Empathy Hole’ by artist Florence Peake. These three women are contemporary shape-shifters in the art industry to watch, and we look forward to introducing and deepening your own knowledge and appreciation of them, for your art history (or herstory) canon.

About Florence Peake:

Dubbed an artist with “unbounded brilliance” by the Independent, Florence Peake is a London-based artist who has been making work since 1995. Her performance practice uses drawing, painting and sculpture combined with found and fabricated objects placed in relation to the moving body. Site and audience, live and recorded text, wit and candour are key to her work, which has been presented internationally and across the UK, in contexts including De La Warr Pavilion (2018), Palais de Tokyo (2018), CRAC Occitanie (2018), Wysing (2017)Serpentine (2016)Whitechapel Gallery (2016)ICA (2015)Harris Museum (2015)Hayward (2014)BALTIC (2013)Frieze (2013)Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2012)

For those of you who missed the BSAA expedition to De La Warr Pavilion in Summer 2018, this is a chance to see alternative artworks by Peake in a different setting.

About Bosse and Baum

Bosse & Baum promotes an open range of developments in the arts, curating site-specific exhibitions and supporting emergent practitioners, with a core focus on audience development and engagement. The gallery has a strong focus on performative art practices, with an active events programme accompanying exhibitions, bringing current discourses to the attention of existing and new audiences, both in the local community and internationally.

Gallery Directors Lana Churchill and Alexandra Warder are steering the gallery to be an open and accessible testing ground that equally provides a solid foundation for artists and audience alike. They encourage active viewing and conversation while simultaneously supporting the growth of their artists beyond the gallery space, into both private and institutional collections. The programme operates within the public and private spheres and is open to new and different experiences, to not only move forward but also take advantage of current cultural and economic conditions.

The exhibition space is based in Peckham, London, where the permanent gallery was founded in 2014. The gallery’s main exhibition and events programme is accompanied by a non-profit and Arts Council England supported project called Micro Social Cultures, which runs from 2018 until 2019.
