Artist Talia Golchin Takes #MeToo Movement to Another Level at The Other Art Fair with her series 'Those We Love & Loathe'.

About

Talia Golchin is exhibiting "Those We Love & Loathe", her series of lightboxes featuring fallen idols and current heroes and heroines of popular culture, at The Other Art Fair until Sunday 7 July.

The exciting young artist is making an impression on the contemporary art world with her daring reinterpretations of the ubiquitous London “Tart Cards”, postcard- sized flyers advertising an array of sexual services.

Golchin subverts a collection of “Tart Cards” that she has spent 5 years gathering from phone boxes and random locations in London, by depicting a carefully curated selection of contemporary figures, some loved, some loathed, in the style of sex hotline adverts. The resulting series of artworks titled “Those We Love and Loathe” debuted at Saatchi Gallery in 2018 before touring to Rome.

Golchin has created new pieces for the series, which are on display for the first time at The Other Art Fair in Kings Cross, in the form of light-boxes containing original calling cards with a hand-etched background inspired by the graffiti found in London phone boxes, and juxtaposed with versions of the cards featuring well-known contemporary figures. There is an interactive aspect to the artworks exhibited at The Other Art Fair, as each image contains a hotline number, which visitors can call.

Talia Golchin comments: ‘Those We Love and Loathe’ was meant as a Social Commentary on some of the most reviled personalities that where so admired and reimagining, what these public figures now stand for.”

Golchin adds her voice to the #MeToo movement with “Those We Love and Loathe”, her series of sexual calling cards re-examining how the media portrays cultural icons including the fallen or controversial idols; Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, Woody Allen, Julian Assange and Bill Cosby. Her depiction of well-known figures from contemporary culture questions the portrayal and influence of prominent figures in our society.

The series also features contemporary media favourites, figures from reality TV, fashion favourites, politicians, sports stars and musical icons including; Kim Kardashian, David Beckham, Mark Zuckerberg, Putin, Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, Caitlyn Jenner, Kim Jong-un and Kanye West. Subverted images of Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian comment on the dangerous contemporary obsession of perfectly curated instagram accounts, and the perfect body image propagated by social media.

As a young fashion graduate, Talia garnered a reputation for art-inspired designs, with her collection being selected for London Graduate Fashion Week in 2012. The collection took inspiration from Wayne Thallon’s Sunday Times article "How does it feel to Grow up in a Brothel."

Talia Golchin, one of London’s most exciting emerging artists, is a woman of Iranian origin who has taken the “Me Too” movement to yet another level. Her conservative background has not held her back from packing a punch with her portrayal of some of the most loved and loathed figures from contemporary film, music and politics. Her no hold’s barred approach epitomizes the famous Helen Reddy’s lyric: “I am woman hear me roar”.

“Those We Love And Loathe”, Golchin’s collection of 50 cultural figures depicted in the style of ‘Tart Cards’, is a sharp-edged social commentary on public figures of the 20th and 21st century. The hard-hitting series has ignited some controversy, yet the imagery is thought provoking and particularly apt as the #MeToo movement continues. This young artist is one to watch, and is becoming recognised for lending her support in the form of her artworks, to the sexual harassment claims by #MeToo founder Rose McGowan and American Actress Alyssa Milano.
