Brooklyn-based contemporary percussion group So Percussion present an audio-visual exploration of the social history of British coal mining in From Out a Darker Sea.

About

For two centuries, the coal industry formed the backbone of many towns and cities across England. Entire communities sprang into existence as fervent mining activity fuelled the industrial revolution. Integrating art, narrative, photography, film and an original musical soundscape performed live, Sō Percussion – known for their innovative and original productions – capture the environment, personal stories, and aspirations of a community fighting against industrial decline.

Born out of a collaboration between the quartet and Amber Films, From Out a Darker Sea is inspired by the reinvention of East Durham after the crushing loss of its mining industry. Combining live performance with community education programmes, Sō Percussion are bringing From Out a Darker Sea to sacred spaces in former coal mining areas, from Derby to Deal, this Autumn.

From Out a Darker Sea is presented at Derby Cathedral in partnership with QUAD. Supported by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring programme, The Foyle Foundation and Unite the Union.
