‘Exploring the Third Dimension’ is a one-day symposium at Hauser & Wirth Somerset that will examine curatorial practice in relation to sculpture through the experiences of international curators working at the top of their field.

About

The symposium will explore different models of display, with reference to cultural activism, education, and engagement with three-dimensional artworks, and invite questions such as how might we think differently about sculpture as an art historical category in its own right.

During the symposium, each of the curators will respond to a question for 10 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of discussion with the full panel that will be chaired by Clare Lilley, Director of Programmes at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Curator of the Frieze Sculpture Park in London. This will be followed by a full panel discussion, bringing in feedback and questions from the audience. The event includes refreshments and lunch served in the Roth Bar and Grill

Speakers include:

Lucy Askew, Senior Curator, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh
Cathleen Chaffee, Chief Curator, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York
Ruth Estévez, Independent curator, writer, and stage designer, Mexico City and Los Angeles
Samuel Leuenberger, Curator, Art Basel Parcours; Founder and Director of SALTS, Birsfelden, Switzerland
Li Zhenhua, Independent curator, artist and producer, Beijing/Shanghai, China

The symposium is the culmination of Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s second International Curatorial Residency, in which a group of influential curators from around the world spend five days immersed the ethos and programming of the gallery. During the residency, the curators – each bringing their own personal experiences and knowledge – will engage with artists, gallery staff and members of the local community, inspiring their creative discourse.
