An exhibition of sculpture, paintings, drawings and prints by one of the major names of St Ives post-War art, Sven Berlin. This artist was an integral part of the critically acclaimed exhibition 'The Dark Monarch: Magic and Modernity in British Art' held at Tate St Ives from 2009 to 2010.
About
Berlin arrived in Cornwall in the mid 1930s, before even Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, and was a founder member of the Crypt Group (1949). After leaving St Ives he lived among the gypsies of the New Forest before finally settling in Dorset, where he died in 1999. An awesomely creative man, Berlin's work was full of the passion and enthusiasm of a person fascinated by life, and all of his prolific output was underpinned by a consummate draughstmanship.
The gallery represents the Estate of Sven Berlin and has held a number of solo exhibitions over the years which have been catalogued. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the show 'Polymath'. It is an eagerly awaited exhibition—collectors, historians, admirers as well as the 'newcomer' embrace his work.
