Svätopluk Mikyta - Memory cracks

annex14 freut sich, zum ersten Mal in Zürich Arbeiten des slovakischen Künstlers Svätopluk Mikyta (*1973) zu zeigen. In seinen Arbeiten beschäftigt er sich mit den Bedingungen der Lesbarkeit von Bildern, den Geschichten die sie zeigen, verbergen oder evozieren. Ein thematischer Ausgangspunkt ist dabei die Geschichte und Kultur seines Landes, der Slovakei, und damit die osteuropäische Geschichte, Kultur und Kunsttradition. Dieses Material bildet den Hintergrund seines künstlerischen Schaffens, wobei es Svätopluk Mikyta darum geht, die Moderne und ihre ideologischen Strukturen immer wieder neu zu befragen und deren Potenzial für die Gegenwart offen zu halten. Und wie es der Titel „Memory cracks“ auch nahe legt, geht es um die kollektiven und individuellen Verdrängungsmechanismen sowie um unterschiedlich motivierte Strategien des Erinnerns.

Seit einiger Zeit arbeitet Svätopluk Mikyta zudem vermehrt mit Themen und Motiven, die man als Allgemeingut bezeichnen könnte oder die zu den verbindenden Erfahrungen der Menschen gehören. Für die aktuelle Ausstellung hat er deshalb aus seinem immensen historischen Bilderarchiv - dazu gehören fotografische Reproduktionen aus Büchern, aber auch Rahmen, Vitrinen und Papier – Motive ausgewählt, die zuallererst einmal unmittelbar zugänglich sind: Naturphänomene, Landschaften und Sport sowie Flora und Fauna. Diese Vorlagen werden mit unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Verfahren bearbeitet, die, wie das mehrmalige Überdrucken von Landschaften, dem Motiv die Vertrautheit entziehen und es in einen eigenartigen Schwebezustand versetzten. Andere Verfahren sind die Montage oder die Collage, mit der durch harte Schnitte oder überraschende Kontextualisierungen unerwartete Assoziationen möglich werden. Einzelne, manchmal widersprüchliche Motive werden zusammen kombiniert und zu einer nicht-linearen Erzählung verdichtet, welche die Bezüge dynamisiert, transformiert und radikalisiert. Dazu gehört auch das Spiel mit An- und Abwesenheit oder mit kompositorischen Interventionen wie in "Blur" (2014), wo der Flügel eines Falters gleichzeitig zur Diagonale eines an den Konstruktivismus erinnernden Bildes wird.

Es ist, wie wenn die Zeit an der Schnittstelle von Vergangenheit und Zukunft in der Schwebe gehalten, wie wenn Verdrängtes und bis anhin Undenkbares in seiner ganzen Widersprüchlichkeit ins Bewusstsein gedrängt würde, um verfestigte Vorstellungen immer wieder aufs Neue herauszufordern.                              Elisabeth Gerber                                                                                                                                 

SVÄTOPLUK MIKYTA (*1973 SK), studierte an der Akademie der Kunst und Design in Bratislava sowie an der Kunstakademie Stuttgart. Er erhielt das DAAD Stipendium an der UDK Berlin (2001/2002). 2008 gewann der den Oskar Cepan Award für junge Slowakische Künstler, 2009 erhielt er die ISCP residency in New York, 2011 gewann er den Strabag Art Award. Seine Arbeiten sind in der Sammlung der Slowakischen Nationalgalerie, der Stadtgalerie Bratislava, the Art Institute Chicago, MUDAM Luxembourg und in weiteren nstitutionen und Privatsammlungen vertreten.

annex14 is delighted to be showing works by the Slovak artist Svätopluk Mikyta (*1973) for the first time in Zurich. Mikyta deals in his works with the conditions under which paintings are read, the stories they show, conceal or evoke. His thematic staring point is the history and culture of his country, Slovakia, and with it the history, culture and art tradition of Eastern Europe. This material forms the background of Svätopluk Mikyta’s artistic work, in which he also repeatedly questions modernism and its ideological structures anew so as to keep their potential in full view for the present day. And as the exhibition title, “Memory Cracks”, also indicatess, this artist is interested in the collective and individual mechanisms of repression as well as the variously motivated strategies of recollection.

For some time now, Svätopluk Mikyta has also been working increasingly with themes and motifs that might be designated as common property, or that are part and parcel of the experiences that interconnect people. For the current exhibition, therefore, in addition to themes with a political context, he has selected from his huge historical image archive – which includes photographic reproductions from books as well as frames, display cases and paper – motifs that are above all directly accessible: natural phenomena, landscapes and sports, as well as flora and fauna. These source materials are reworked using different artistic processes which, like the repeated overprinting of landscapes, rob the motif of its familiarity, thus putting it into a strange hovering state. Other processes he uses are montage or collage, which facilitate unexpected associations through hard cuts or surprising contextualisations. Single, sometimes contradictory motifs are combined into a non-linear narrative that energises, transforms and radicalises the links. This also includes playing with presence and absence or with compositional interventions that in some cases, recall the pictorial idiom of Constructivism.

It is almost as if time is being held in suspense at the interface of past and future, as if something repressed and until then inconceivable is being made conscious in all its contradictoriness so as to challenge rigid notions over and over again.  Elisabeth Gerber
