Suraya Arts is a group of Artists who, through sale of their art, raise funds for the education and training of women living in extreme poverty so that they can build sustainable lives for themselves and their children. This year we are supporting Art Refuge UK.

About

Suraya Arts is a vibrant collective of artists. The artists produce art in a particularly wide range of forms, ranging from painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, textiles and traditional art forms.

Our common characteristic is a creativity that leads us all to look outwards towards people whose lives are very different from our own. We know how lucky we are to be able to express ourselves freely in a peaceful environment. For this reason, every year, we identify a project to support, through donations from those attending our shows, and by donating 10% of our art sales we raise funds for the education and training of those who are living in extreme poverty.

We look carefully for an organisation, not necessarily large, but transparent in its operation and integrity. For 2017 we have chosen Art Refuge UK, a small but robust organisation based in East London, that works with people who have been displaced by war, religious persecution, natural and other disasters. Art Refuge UK uses the skills of trained art therapists to provide safe spaces, psychological support, counselling and opportunities for self-expression and simple respite to traumatised adults and children. They are currently working in the camps in Northern France providing invaluable support, counselling and therapy to the displaced women, men and children there. This seems to us a particularly appropriate cause in a year when stateless and abused people, those increasingly regarded as ‘them’, are facing a more perilous and seemingly unfriendly world.

Now in our third year, we’re looking forward to our show at The Framer’s Gallery, a light and spacious venue right in the heart of London.

Join us for what will be a vibrant, colourful show. We are looking forward to meeting you.
