The Arches Studios will open its doors to the public with its annual Summer Open Studios on the 20th and 21st May this year; a free event filled with art, workshops, film, and more.

About

Located inside converted storage spaces underneath the historic Central Bridge, near Southampton’s Old Town, The Arches is home to 23 studio spaces where locally based artists work. Open Studios offers a chance for the public to look around the spaces, meet and chat to the artists, and maybe buy some art.

This year the resident artists will also be putting on an exhibition of work exploring the concept of loss, which will be up throughout the weekend. Responding to their exploration of this theme, the artists have put together a ‘Death Chat Cafe’, a facilitated discussion on all things relating to death and loss. Artists will also lead workshops such as knitting for beginners and improvers with Jilly Evans, pot making with Emily Brown, yoga meditation with Jaime West, and more. All workshops are free and welcome all ages.

Due to its yearly increasing popularity, the event will continue to grow with the addition of film screenings, and an Art Book Fair, both held on Sunday. Selected from SQIFF’s (Scottish Queer International Film Festival) 2016 programme, resident artist Asten Holmes-Elliot has put together a screening of a series of short films, all of which are engaged critically and playfully with LGBQT issues. The Art Book Fair will play host to a selection of stalls by local art organisations including the John Hansard Gallery, K6 Gallery, Book Case Press, Solent Press and more.

Another exciting addition to the weekend’s line up this year is a reimagined artist led version of Blind Date, with visual arts guests Katie Daley Yates of Host Productions, and John Hansard Gallery’s new director, Woodrow Kernohan.

This year’s Open Studios will be topped off with the return of a craft beer bar run by local micro pub, The Butchers Hook, as well as street food kitchen Frisky Avocado.

The Arches will be open to the public from 10am to 8pm on Saturday 20th, and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 21st.
