About
Street Art Festival 2018
11th August–1st September
Launch Party: Friday 10th August, 18:00–22:00
This Summer at Surface Gallery sees the return of the most anarchic, the most spectacular show in town: the Nottingham Street Art Festival. This hugely popular exhibition supports and promotes Nottingham’s vibrant alternative art scene by showcasing some of today’s best local talent.
As Nottingham Post remarked: this “richly varied exhibition is just as vital and impressive as ever. As always, an anti-authoritarian streak can be detected—not just in Helaina Barkworth’s Grenfell tower image, or the punk-inspired posters by Deviant Angel, but in more playful cartoons such as Neil Tunnard’s Up Yours!—a pink tank whose gun has become a rigid digit, seemingly beamed up to 2017 from 1967”.
As if deviant angels and rigid digits weren’t enough to grab your fancy, this year the exhibition will again occupy our three-story building from top to bottom—including our alternative artspace, Le Loovre. Dolly Loves Dallas, prize winner of last year’s Street Art Festival, will be taking up residence in Le Loovre with a solo exhibition entitled Touchez Moi. This work is inspired by the body and Rui Da Silva's early-noughties dance floor hit Touch Me. Following in the extraordinary steps of Rui and Cassandra Banks, Touchez Moi aims to add a little spice to the Le Loovre through the manipulation of ink and limbs.
The Street Art Festival launches with a DJ set from the incomparable Simon Vinyl Junkie. You’ll also be able to sample some nicely spiced cooking from Uncle Wayne’s Jerk Station. As always, there will be a donations bar with a range of ales from local breweries, Springhead and Pheasantry.
Prizes will be awarded on the night by our panel of judges: Goya Torres, winner of last year’s Hung Up prize, Stephen Barker, Creative Quarter CEO, and Maseu, stencil artist extraordinaire.
This is a great opportunity to pick up some terrific art at affordable prices.
Block Party: Saturday 18th August, 11:00–19:00
Later in the month, we head over the street to Sneinton Market. The Block Party will feature a vibrant urban marketplace, accompanied by live painting, skateboarders, and DJ sets from Where WAX.
