Strata – a Stitched Excavation is the all new exhibition from Phoenix Contemporary Textiles. A fascinatingly wide show of interpretations on a simply-stated theme.
About
‘Strata – a Stitched Excavation’ represents the culmination of two years of research, workshops and reflective work by the Phoenix Contemporary Textile Group. The group explores this theme through varied perspectives – geological, geographical, social, historical and abstract – to produce vibrant hangings, 3D work and collaborative pieces.
The members of the Group are lively, like-minded textile artists working in diverse methods and media: stitch, cloth, paper, felt, dye and paint. Ten members will be showing innovative works on the theme of Strata.
Each artist works within their chosen medium, producing small and large pieces of work. Their goal is to explore their own creativity, to be challenged and to push the boundaries of what is perceived. In today’s world of mass production it is important that artists are given the opportunity and freedom to explore and express their own individual ideas in a creative way.
The group was formed in 1992 and meets once a month in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, to pursue their own work and to offer encouragement, help and advice to one another. By sharing their love of textiles, they look to highlight, educate and to promote interest in this versatile medium.
