About

The starting point for Joe King and Rosie Pedlow's exhibition is a winter's night in 1980 when US servicemen witnessed ‘unexplained lights' in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk. The incident quickly became Britain's most famous UFO mystery with abounding rumours of conspiracies and cover-ups. Some argue that the incident was a hoax whilst others believe that the forest is a doorway to another dimension. Maintaining a balance between celebration and criticality, the artists revisited the forest, some thirty years later, in search of similarly 'inexplicable' events. The outcome of their stay is this intriguing exhibition at Art Exchange, Colchester. Central to the show is a moving image piece shot from different pitches on a campsite, a stone's throw from the alleged landing site. Making use of long-exposure and time-lapse photography, the artists trained their cameras on the night sky to record any extraordinary events. Shown on two screens as part of a new installation, strange lights invade the gallery space, mingling with the sounds of the forest, SETI signals and a recording made on the night of the incident. A thought-provoking and, ultimately, surprising exhibition that engages with our natural curiosity of what's ‘out there'. Joe King and Rosie Pedlow are two British artists working primarily in moving image. Their work is exhibited in the UK and internationally to wide acclaim and in 2008 they were awarded the inaugural Jerwood Moving Image Award for their work Sea Change (2006).
