About
Nicola Slattery RBA returns to the wonderful Mandell’s Gallery in Norwich in May with an exhibition of her recent works. Included in the exhibition will be her painting “Blue Bowl” which has a particular resonance with the historic quarter in which Elm Hill and the gallery are located.
“I have always felt a sense of gratitude to the Dutch for their many great painters whose work I admire. Johannes Vermeer and Vincent Van Goch are two of my favourites. They also gave the world beautiful Delft ware and were the source of many of England’s first refugees. Many of these “Strangers” and Huguenots settled in Norwich bringing skills of weaving and land drainage. They were known for their love of a caged Canary to sing whilst at their work and this is believed to be the source of the famous Norwich Football club Canary emblem and nickname of “The Canaries”. I have tried to encapsulate these elements in my painting and hope it reminds us of our connectivity to our European friends, refugees and our shared history.”
View this and over forty other recent works by the award winning Norfolk based artist who is a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
