Master stone sculptor Melanie Wilks leads a two-day masterclass to help you gain first-hand understanding of the sculptural processes Barbara Hepworth used. Work with fine limestone and traditional handheld tools to create unique limestone carvings for your home or garden.
About
Master stone sculptor Melanie Wilks leads a two-day masterclass, creating unique limestone carvings for your home or garden inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s use of the direct stone carving method. This is a rare chance to explore the legacy of Barbara Hepworth and gain first-hand understanding of the sculptural processes Hepworth pursued, using fine limestone and traditional handheld tools.
Working with the stone intuitively and understanding each block of stone has its own unique characteristics to work with, you will initiate a number of sketches and drawings considering sculptural forms and shapes.
You are welcome to bring your own ideas and drawings with you or take inspiration from the works in the gallery. You will then work in The Calder, where you will be provided with traditional Stone-Carving tools like mallets and chisels with which to carve a block of limestone.
You will sand and refine your sculpture on the second day, ensuring it is completed within the two days. Limestone sculptures are durable and long-lasting, by the end of the masterclass you will have produced a sculpture which will have a place in your home for years to come.
It is advised that you wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dusty. Aprons will be provided.
Half of the allocated places are offered to Members at the discounted rate of 25% off, sold on a first come, first served basis. Become a Member.
Book your place online or if you have any questions or special requirements then don't hesitate to get in touch by emailing learning@hepworthwakefield.org or calling 01924 247398.
