About

In this workshop participants will explore a combination of traditional hand embroidery techniques, how you do it and why you do it. We will explore the slowness and rhythms of hand stitching; the versatility and strengths of embroidery for drawing and mark-making; and the pleasure in having time to make.

We will explore the following stitches: straight / running / seeding / couching / whipped + laced / back / fly / chain / blanket 

Create textures and patterns, work a stitch in different threads changing its scale and spacing, work freely, and combine stitches to mark make and draw. Practical help will be given by demonstrating the many ways in which this can be achieved using the most simple of hand embroidery techniques, no knowledge of particular and precise embroidery techniques are needed. 

Tea/ coffee will be served throughout and there will be a short break for cake.

All materials are provided. You will leave with a handout, artist and book list, fabric, to carry on stitching post-workshop.

About your tutor:

McVetis is interested in how process, specifically stitch, can reveal a world seen from within and from a scale that can tell us much more about ourselves, about our own trajectories in space, our own interactions, and networks of processes that act as a catalyst for transformation within our lives.

Finalist of the 2018 Loewe Craft Prize, Richard’s artwork has been celebrated in galleries, art fairs, and museums across the world including Iceland, Ukraine, Pakistan, South Korea, UAE, and the USA. Richard has been a finalist for the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2011 and 2017, a finalist for the Cheongju International Craft Prize in 2015 and was selected to be part of the British Pavilion, Form + Motion at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in 2017. He has taught extensively and has been invited to run masterclasses at a number of institutions, including the Royal College of Art.

McVetis, is a graduate of the Royal College of Art in 2008, he lives and works in London.
