About

Following on from a highly successful award-winning year, Minimalist Photography Award, Open Category 2019; British Photography Award 2019; Chromatic International Photography Award 2019 and a Julia Margaret Cameron Award, Open Category 2020, fine art photographer, Mieke, is bringing her work to the public with her first solo show at the Carousel Next Door Gallery in January 2020.

Mieke is a self-taught photographer who looks at ordinary things differently. Her powerful images strip down the unnecessary and focus on simple lines and moments of movement and stillness.  Two of her images chosen by Jock McFayden for his Menagerie at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2019, will be included in this exhibition.

Inspired by 17th Century Dutch Master Painters, Mieke experiments with modern techniques to create digital images of the natural world suspended, as 21st Century Still Life. Her work moves between fact and fiction and constantly challenges the boundaries of photography and art.

Mieke is a Dutch Canadian, born in Toronto in 1962. She lives in London with her husband and two children. Having given up successful careers in Law and business to raise her family, in her 50’s she decided to pursue her passion for photography. Mieke’s scope rapidly moved beyond holiday snaps and photographing her children. Spurred on by a friend to enter some competitions, Mieke’s images quickly won awards. Initially shocked and then emboldened, she began experimenting with innovate techniques to create her own very unique style and vision.

Open to the public: 17-19th January 2020

By appointment: up to the 13th March 2020
