About
Nick White has been a professional photogrpaher since the mid-eighties. He started his career chasing demonstrations for Time Out and City Limits. Then through his friend Graham Taylor (Lock) he started to photograph jazz musicians for NME and Wire. His work diversified into other musicians such as Brian Eno, Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies and Gavin Bryars - some of which are in the National Portrait Gallery. He began to work with dancers in 1999 with a chance encounter with Siobhan Davies when he was asked to create the poster for her piece 'Wild Air' with Sarah Warsop.
Dance is an antithesis to photography - it depends upon movement and narrative, bodies moving through space - the still image breaks that and demands attention for special, perhaps decisive moments - snatching little jewels from the temporal flow.
Nick has tried to find the way the viewer can be led to think about the relationship between the still flat image and the bubbling churning movement from which it is literally taken.
Do come and view the pictures at the theatre. For more info see http://www.nickwhite.co.uk/dance
