Still Life

Still Life , or nature morte , was an established genre for visual artists long before photography existed. For the pioneer photographers it provided an artistic reference point and one that could most easily be accommodated within the technical constraints of their embryonic processes. The work in this selection shows us how it continues to maintain a present relevance whilst consciously acknowledging its history. In selecting Still Life as the theme for this work, the Contemporary Group of The Royal Photographic Society was conscious of the multiple facets that make photography and photographs, simultaneously one of the most contemporary visual media, and one that stands within its own 190 years of history.
