Such is the artworld’s recent enthusiasm for figurative painting that one might be forgiven for thinking that this is where all the most interesting moves are being made, but of course this isn’t true. The age-old conversation between figuration and abstraction continues - it’s all image making with a potential to channel emotion, and in a way it’s all storytelling, even when there’s no apparent narrative to follow. As Picasso put it, ‘there’s no such thing as figurative and non-figurative art. All things appear to us in the shape of forms… they affect us more or less intensely.'
