an art film festival celebrating the city partnership berlin – los angeles within the scope of berlin art week at kino arsenal at potsdamer platz and in the FAHRBEREITSCHAFT.

About

to honor the occasion of the 50-year-long city partnership between berlin and los angeles, film curator dr. marc glöde and collector axel haubrok present a film festival which focuses on films by artists from los angeles. la > x will take place during berlin art week and run for 2 days, from tuesday september 12, 2017 to wednesday september 13, 2017. the founders continue last year’s film festival success “artist films at kino international” which was shown at the opening of berlin art week 2016.

the main festival program will take place on wednesday september 13, 2017 at kino arsenal at potsdamer platz. it’s devoted exclusively to films by artists from and about los angeles. the showcase includes edgar arceneaux, john baldessari, james benning, morgan fisher, alex hubbard, sarah morris, ryan trecartin, and kerry tribe.

parallel, an exhibition with works from stephen prina and christopher williams will be on display, two artists from los angeles who deal with the medium of film from a structural point of view. the exhibition runs until december 2, 2017.

berlin and los angeles both look back – despite their differences – on a longstanding film tradition. both cities share a lively experimental film scene. while in los angeles themes such as light, landscape, hollywood and performance play an important role, in berlin questions surround political issues, city development, migration and institutional critiques. given this background, a comparative look between berlin and the film and video-art of los angeles is illuminating on multiple levels.

this year, the organizers once again make free admission to the film screenings possible. in order to grant a wide audience access to art films that would otherwise only be shown in galleries or exhibition halls – and on the big screen, using exceptionally high-quality technology and often for the first time in original format.

la > x offers the opportunity to see excellent and rare film contributions and to participate in a lively city partnership within the scope of the festival.

Artists: Edgar Arceneaux, John Baldessari, Morgan Fisher, Alex Hubbard, Ryan Trecartin, Kerry Tribe
