Steady Wings Workshop with Leonard Retel Helmrich

Presented by Open City London Documentary Festival (, Leonard Retel Helmrich will run a one day practical hands-on workshop in a small focused group. The workshop includes screenings of three of his latest works. Leonard Retel Helmrich's trilogy of Indonesian documentaries have won awards worldwide. His most famous, Shape Of The Moon, has won ‘Best Documentary' at both Sundance and IDFA. He has developed both a theoretical perspective and a practical technique for the approach he calls 'single shot cinema', which involves long takes with a constantly moving camera. He has also designed a special camera mount that allows extraordinary stability and flexibility in shooting, nicknamed "Steadywings". Not only does the workshop present a unique chance to work with Helmrich's ‘Steadywings' camera mount, specially developed to shoot in the very flexible way that is typical for Single Shot Cinema, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from one of the world's leading documentarians and network with some of the most dynamic and ambitious filmmakers in the country. Dates: 8 June, 2011 (Screenings of The Eye of the Day and Shape of the Moon from 16.00 on 7th) Location: University College London, WC1 Price: £50 NUS/ £100 Standard (Cheque, Credit Card and Cash accepted) Booking:
