A Collage Group Exhibition curated by Jorge Chamorro

About

How does art challenge us? How can we escape the system with its help in order to discover and construct the new truths? Is it about understanding or is it about loving it?

While the fundamental characteristic of collage is to decontextualize and recontextualize the chosen material and its final transformation, the very context in which this exhibition is held is an experiment. The Lab at Stillpoint Spaces Berlin is an experiment in taking psychoanalysis outside the clinical practice room and onto the street.

We invite you to the opening of a collage group exhibition ’State of Mind’ and encourage you to test and experience what happens in the interplay of art and psychology. Throughout the history of psychoanalysis, many authors have provided theoretical considerations and interpretations on the state of mind of an artist at the very moment of engaging in a creative process and also on the state of mind which is evoked by the artworks in the audience. As a psychoanalyst Hanna Segal formulated, ’’The artist is always in search of the psychic truth“ and: ’’Aesthetic experience in the recipient involves psychic work. This is what distinguishes it from pure entertainment or sensuous pleasure’’.

Collage offers us a surprise and a ’new wholeness’ made out of singular parts. What we encounter in this combination of different pieces can be understood as the complex situation where one thing and the other constantly interfere and mix together in an endless way and create completely new and unpredictable meanings. In psychology, it is known that a group of people is something more than a simple gathering of individuals. A therapy is something more than an encounter between a person who is in pain and a person who knows all the answers. What lies underneath is the unconscious. It is highly personal and at the same time highly influenced by the others.

Join us in the exploration of these new meanings. The opening of the exhibition is on the 16th November, from 19:00 to 21:00. The artworks will be presented in the space until the 14th December. Regular working hours of the Lab at Stillpoint Spaces Berlin are from Monday to Friday, between 10 and 18h. If you would like to see the exhibition or buy some of the artworks, please email us at berlin@stillpointspaces.com.
