About

The Aldrich is marking its 50th Anniversary with a series of exhibitions and programs highlighting not just the Museum's legacy, but also the relationship between the era in which it was founded and our current cultural landscape. With perspective gained through five decades, and through an ongoing dialogue with exhibiting artists, the anniversary exhibitions explore Aldrich's formative years of 1964 to 1974 with three overlapping series of exhibitions presented over the course of a year.

The first series Standing in the Shadows of Love: The Aldrich Collection 1964–1974 is a two-part exhibition of iconic, historical works that are representative of The Aldrich's early collection, acquired by the Museum's founder, Larry Aldrich. This series is presented in transitional spaces throughout the Museum and is accompanied by historical materials from The Aldrich’s archive that document the often intimate connections between the individual artists whose work is on view and the institution.

The second series presents seven new projects by contemporary artists whose work reflects the continuing influence of both art and culture from the 1960s and 1970s, in relationship with the historical works.

The third series presents four solo exhibitions of current work by established artists who were either collected by Larry Aldrich or included in significant exhibitions during the Museum's first decade. These artists were chosen because their early careers were intimately connected with Larry Aldrich’s patronage and now, as senior figures, their work continues to resonate with urgency in contemporary culture.

In the corridor space on the Museum’s first floor is a timeline of The Aldrich’s first 50 years that includes institutional milestones and exhibition highlights. The timeline also presents the exhibition history at the Museum of both the artists whose historical work are on view and the four Aldrich alumni whose work is the subject of solo shows during the anniversary year.
