Squaring the Circle

About

A major exhibition at the Aktis Gallery in London of works by four preeminent Russian Non-conformist artists who were at the forefront of the fight for artistic integrity under a hostile regime in USSR during the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition celebrates the distinctive routes these artists have taken in pursuit of their art.

Flanking works from the 1960s ' when the struggle for the freedom of artistic expression in Russia was particularly intense ' will be earlier works, along with later examples, from when each artist began to be exhibited internationally, up to the present.

Squaring the Circle celebrates Russia's rediscovery of its own hidden cultural past, and the defiance of D. Krasnopevtsev (1925-1995), O. Rabin (b.1928), O.Tselkov (b.1934), and V.Yankilevsky (b.1938) in the face of the repressive state dogma of socialist realism. Unrecognized in the USSR for many years, their work is now represented in museums and important private collections in America, France, Germany and Russia.
