Celebrating the gallery’s 5th anniversary with a group exhibition featuring paintings by Alison McWhirter and Claire Beattie, ceramics by Jasmin Rowlandson, Chris Taylor and Mizuyo Yamashita and jewellery by Sally Spencer.
About
Junction Art Gallery in Woodstock will be celebrating its 5th anniversary this March with a mixed exhibition bringing together a group of artists who have shown with the gallery since its opening in 2012, along with some exciting new faces.
In the last 5 years Junction Art Gallery has earned a reputation for showing innovative, contemporary art and craft by some of the most talented artists and makers currently working in the UK.
Highlights of this exhibition will include paintings by two of Scotland’s foremost contemporary painters; Alison McWhirter and Claire Beattie, both of whom have had hugely successful solo shows in the last year.
McWhirter’s paintings are intense, created from a series of quick, deliberate strokes using a palette of dense, vibrant colours. She is best known for her paintings of flowers which verge on the abstract and exude energy.
In contrast Beattie builds up layers of subtle hues which dance on the canvas and gradually reveal their depth. Trees are the main focus of her work; their quiet presence conveyed on the canvas and given weight by the light and weather that surrounds them. A move towards still life has been an interesting development and one which conveys the same restrained stillness.
Also exhibiting is Jasmin Rowlandson who creates intricate sculptures in porcelain. Her sculptures are delicate micro-worlds, echoing forms of sea urchins and coral and full of texture and vitality. Their graceful structures are complemented with subtle mother-of-pearl lustre and gold gilt.
Also on show will be ceramics by Chris Taylor and Misuyo Yamashita and jewellery by Sally Spencer. Alongside this will be the gallery’s permanent collection of jewellery, glass, sculpture, painting, printmaking and ceramics from UK-based artists and makers.
The exhibition will run until 30th April
