About

Our Spring exhibition features 5 artists whose work is a celebration of depth of colour, texture and technique.

Alison McWhirter has just had her first solo show in London. Her use of colour is bold and fresh, often mixed on the canvas to preserve the intensity. There is a tension between the objects on her canvases which are bound together by a subtle layering of colour, paring down the detail and allowing the image to reveal itself.

Laura Rich’s heightened use of colour describes the landscape and the feel of being within it, surrounded by a huge expanse of sky. Her land and seascapes are contemplative and yet energetic, drawing you in with their familiarity. Her use of colour and texture are echoed in Stephen Murfitt’s imposing ceramics. Raku firing creates a rich palette on the surface of his vessels and he explores interior and exterior spaces through the contours of his handbuilt forms.

This focus on form is also a feature of Yo Thom’s ceramics, which are both thrown and hand-built and made to be used. Her work has an unassuming elegance, with simple surface decoration which complements the tactile, rounded forms.

Jo Newman’s glass is a culmination of many different ways of working, from printmaking to quick calligraphic brushstrokes, used as a way of distilling her experiences of a place. Her abstract compositions in glass are expressive and vibrant with texture achieved from the pate de verre method of fusing glass paste.
