Arrival and Incision: Networks of Affinity in Indian Modernism. Workshop, discussion and film screening with Natasha Ginwala (curator and writer, Berlin / Colombo), Devika Singh (art historian and curator, Paris) and Deepak Ananth (art historian, Paris)
The workshop will focus on Euro-american artists travels and recurring engagement in India through the mid twentieth-century that led to vital re-negotiation of the modern cannon and networks of cultural affinity. German-speaking art historians and artists who left Europe in the 1930s for India as part of the post-Weimar migration are also highlighted for their participation in shaping Indian modernism and taking up lead positions in the nascent cultural infrastructure during the post-independence period.
Participants will also address different case studies, experimental cinema and exhibition models in order to engage with the staging of global art history, collection-building and ask how the exhibition can remain a site of inquiry into multifaceted modernist grammar and its relevance today.
